Ashwagandha Ghee
Here is a simple preparation of ashwagandha root powder, prepared in ghee, which is a traditional way to take this herb. It’s quite strong in flavour so I find it a bit tricky to add directly to foods. As such, I have found that this recipe makes for an easy way to take it - a teaspoonful straight from the fridge works best for me. Sure, its a bit bitter, but I really quite enjoy it. If you like the bitter of dark chocolate, you will probably be fine with these flavours too. If not, you might do better with an option that includes chocolate, or by taking the ashwagandha in capsule form. You can learn more about Ashwagandha HERE.
INGREDIENTS
100ml ghee, preferable organic grass fed (easy to make yourself if you like)
1/4 cup ashwagandha powder
1 teaspoon ginger powder
1 teaspoon each ground cardamom and cinnamon
1-2 tablespoons of honey (or to taste)
OPTIONAL
1 teaspoon grated nutmeg - a nice addition if you take it before bed to improve sleep
2 teaspoon powdered rose petal - lovely but if you don’t have them, you can still make the recipe
If your taste buds are sensitive and you find the flavour of ashwagandha too strong, add in about 30 grams (one ounce) of high quality super dark melted chocolate. You may need to include a bit more honey as well.
Warm the ghee slightly to melt it. If it gets too hot, let it cool down to a comfortable temperature where its still liquid but not hot.
Combine the ashwagandha powder, cinnamon, cardamom, ginger and optional grated nutmeg and rose petal powder.
Add the spice mixture and honey to the warm melted ghee, and stir well to combine. If the ghee is not too warm, the powder should mix evenly throughout the ghee and stay suspended in the mixture. If not, give it a stir now and then as it cools down.
I store mine in a small jar in the fridge and take a teaspoonful dose daily. If you prefer, you could also roll them into teaspoon sized balls and freeze them.
